Walmart Marketplace announced on November 6, 2026 that it will assess Return Rate at the item level as well as across the seller account. Beginning in January 2027, a product with a high rate of seller-accountable returns may receive a warning or be temporarily unpublished even when the seller's overall Return Rate meets the standard. Brands should audit return drivers by SKU now, starting with items that have meaningful sales or repeat complaints.
What Walmart has and has not specified
Walmart directs sellers to Seller Center's Returns page and “View returns insight” for item-level Return Rate, units returned and top return reasons. The release note does not give a single item-level percentage that guarantees enforcement. Do not treat the account-wide threshold as a safe harbor for every product, or assume that every return counts as seller-accountable.
Walmart's Return Rate guidance describes seller-accountable reasons such as defective, damaged, incorrect or late items. Its overall standard is measured over a 60-day period. Verify the current metric and any warning shown for your own account before taking action.
Turn return reasons into fixes
Sort SKUs by return volume and return rate together. A small item with one return can show a dramatic percentage without the same exposure as a high-volume product with a recurring defect. For a flagged SKU, compare customer reasons with reviews, product detail content, variant mapping, warehouse picks, packaging and carrier outcomes. Correct the cause you can substantiate: a misleading size chart needs a listing fix; damage needs a packaging or handling fix; wrong-item returns need a fulfillment check.
This triage is Etail Rocket's recommendation. Walmart has announced item-level action, but has not promised that any particular edit will prevent a warning.
Before January
- Export or record item-level metrics and the time period shown in Seller Center.
- Assign owners to high-exposure SKUs and document the top seller-accountable reasons.
- Make targeted catalog, quality or fulfillment corrections; retain evidence of the change.
- Review the metric and any Walmart notices weekly through the rollout.
