Shopify's Agentic Knowledge Base: What Established Brands Should Check Now

Shopify has moved Knowledge base into the Agentic section of its admin. It gives merchants a place to review the store facts that AI agents can retrieve when shoppers ask questions about the business. For an established brand, the immediate job is straightforward: inspect the published facts, correct outdated answers, and assign someone to maintain them. Shopify announced the admin change on October 26, 2026. Its Fall '26 Edition, published October 28, also highlighted the feature.

What changed

The page is at Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base. Shopify draws information from public storefront pages and applicable admin settings, then organizes it into fields such as returns, shipping, contact details, and gift services. Merchants can review sources, edit fields, and publish or unpublish information. The published knowledge base is available through Shopify's Storefront MCP for AI channels to query.

There is a meaningful distinction in the publication rules. Storefront facts generated from a scan remain unpublished until a merchant publishes them. Shopify's help documentation says some facts linked to admin settings, including policies and contact details, are published when Shopify creates them. Teams should therefore check the published view, not assume every fact is waiting for approval.

Why this matters for a multichannel brand

An AI shopping assistant may be asked whether an item can arrive by a certain date, whether a return is allowed, or whether gift wrapping is available. An answer based on an old policy can disappoint a customer even if the product listing is correct. This is an operational risk, especially when promotions and fulfillment promises change across Shopify, Amazon, Walmart, and TikTok Shop.

That risk assessment is our inference, not a claim that Shopify guarantees an AI assistant will show a particular answer or send traffic. The knowledge base handles non-product store information; product catalog eligibility and product data are separate parts of Shopify's agentic commerce setup.

A practical review for this week

  1. Open Sales channels > Agentic > Knowledge base and inspect what is already published. Start with shipping, returns, warranties, customer support, and gift services.
  2. Compare each material fact with the live storefront policy and current operations. Fix mismatches at the source where appropriate, and check the knowledge base again.
  3. Review each field's reference links. Shopify says these links can accompany facts retrieved by agents. Use customer-facing pages that support the answer.
  4. Check suggested updates after policy or service changes. Shopify says it does not apply scanned changes without merchant approval, and scans may not catch every change promptly. For urgent corrections, edit the field directly.
  5. Give an owner responsibility for monthly review and an extra check before a major promotion or holiday cutoff. This cadence is our recommendation, not a Shopify requirement.

The old app deadline

Shopify says its standalone Knowledge Base app will no longer be available after January 15, 2027. If a store had 1,000 or fewer facts in that app, Shopify says authored or edited facts were moved and published. For stores with more than 1,000 facts, Shopify says those facts did not transfer automatically; teams should select and add the facts they need before the deadline. The current knowledge base holds a total of 1,000 facts. Review the store's actual migration state before assuming anything carried over.

The first win here is accurate, current store information. Treat any lift in AI discovery or conversion as a hypothesis to measure, not a promised outcome. If your team wants a second set of eyes on the content and channel handoffs, request an audit from Etail Rocket.
